Obviously, Apple wants to extricate itself from depending on Google for mapping services. Recall Tim Cook’s 2009 manifesto:
“We believe that we need to own and control the primary technologies behind the products we make, and participate only in markets where we can make a significant contribution.”
I think mapping is a primary technology for mobile computing.
