Apple OS 27.2 Betas Are Out; Version 27.1 Is the Duo-Exclusive iOS Fork

Apple just seeded the first beta of iOS 27.2 to developers for testing. Yes, you read that correctly: iOS 27.2, not iOS 27.1.

Why no iOS 27.1 beta? The answer likely relates to the iPhone Duo.

This unusual version numbering is entirely about the Duo. The Duo is on its own fork of iOS — heretofore to keep details about its software secret / internal to Apple. When it launches October 23, Apple has already announced it will ship with iOS 27.1. Apple is thus using 27.2 as the version number for the first post-27.0 updates to all of its OSes for devices other than the Duo, to keep those version numbers aligned. The 27.2 releases, I am to understand, are scheduled to ship in October too. I bet they’ll ship after the iPhone Duo launches on October 23. So, putting beta releases aside, we’ll see the versions hit the public in numeric order:

  • All OS 27.0 releases: two days ago.
  • iOS 27.1: October 23, exclusively on the iPhone Duo.
  • All OS 27.2.0 releases: probably in late October, after the 23rd, but with the Duo remaining on its own 27.1 fork.

Then, with a subsequent 27.2.x update, the Duo with join the other devices and version numbers across all devices on all platforms will converge, in November or early December. I believe that’s the plan. Maybe Duo convergence will wait for 27.3, but I think it’ll be a 27.2.x update.

Something similar happened back in 2010 with the original iPad, which launched in April 2010 running what was then still called iPhone OS, version 3.2. iPhone OS 3.2 was exclusive to the iPad — no iPhone or iPod Touch ever ran it. (Those devices remained on v3.1 after the iPad launched.) Apple renamed the OS to iOS at WWDC in June that year, but iOS 4.0 and 4.1 remained exclusive to iPhones and iPod Touches. Convergence with the iPad didn’t happen until iOS 4.2 in late November.

This time it should only take a month or so to converge for the Duo, not seven or eight months like it did for the iPad in 2010. But iOS 27.1 is exclusively for the Duo in a very similar way that 3.2 was exclusive to the iPad.
