Gartner Predicts Mobile OS Market Share

Lots of people apparently think it’s a big deal that Gartner is predicting Android will surpass iOS for second place. But why is that necessarily a good thing, given that they’re predicting Symbian will remain in first place? Who thinks Symbian is actually doing well? Nokia’s board sure doesn’t. Raw market share is not the game here. (Maybe raw market share is everything Google is after with Android, considering they’re giving it away for free. But it’s certainly not what Apple’s after.)

The Macalope:

Android’s popular, there’s no denying that, but at what price comes popularity when you wake up in a strange hotel room with your arm around Bing?

Manton Reece Hopes iAd Fails

Manton Reece:

I don’t want to see ads in my apps, and I don’t want Apple to ever lose even a little of what it means to be a product-driven company.

I like this tweet Manton quotes from Petteri Hiisilä:

If you’re not paying for it, you’re not the customer; you are the product being sold.

Update: This Metafilter comment is apparently the source for that quote.
